Create timeless imagery in a daylight studio!

Portraits and nudes, as in painting, were natural subjects in the formal beginnings of photography, and many of the most enduring images were shot in daylight studios. This one-day workshop, held in turn-of-the-century daylight studios, continues a classic approach to studio light. You will learn to see and shape daylight, work with models to discover compelling poses and experiment with creative and technical approaches to create a series. Craft and technique are addressed in the morning, and we shoot in the morning and afternoon.

This three-session hands-on photography workshop gives teens ages 14–18 the opportunity to explore photography while developing a body of work that can be used for personal portfolios and high school and college applications.

Across three Saturdays, students will photograph a variety of subjects and styles including street photography, still lifes, portraits, and abstract images while experimenting with composition, light, color, perspective, and visual storytelling.

Students will also learn from professional artists, photographers, and educators who will guide them through the process of looking critically at their work, identifying their strongest images, and developing a cohesive portfolio.

Session 1: Saturday, October 10

Students will learn photography fundamentals and begin creating their own images through hands-on exercises in street photograph and portraiture, with a focus on storytelling, composition, and developing a personal visual style. The focus is on experimentation, observation, and discovering what interests them as photographers.

Session 2: Saturday, October 17

Students will continue photographing stills lifes and abstraction, with a focus on color and composition. They’ll review their images and begin identifying themes and connections within their work.

Session 3: Saturday, October 24

Students will learn from professional photographers and artists how to edit, sequence, and curate a body of work. With guidance from instructors, they’ll select their strongest images and create a cohesive series.

By the end of the three-week workshop, each student will have gained practical experience in the creative process from making photographs to editing and curating a finished body of work.

No previous photography experience is required. Students are asked to bring a digital camera with manual exposure control.

Program Overview

Each session is offered as a half-day or full-day immersive experience, combining hands-on technical training, creative development, and guided photo shoots across New York City.

Sessions typically begin at Andrew French’s daylight studio in Union Square, and may include field-based shooting throughout NYC depending on the selected topic. Each session is designed as a focused 4-hour intensive.
