Stories live inside the Carlton Arms Hotel . . . a farmer’s inn in the 1800s, a speakeasy during prohibition, a hangout for NYC’s underground in the 1950s and ‘60s, and now “Manhattan’s famous art hotel.” You can feel echoes of the past and inspiration is everywhere in the art-covered rooms and hallways. Against this backdrop, you will discover narratives, experiment with visual storytelling, and build a stunning portrait series through setting.

Create timeless imagery in a daylight studio!

Portraits and nudes, as in painting, were natural subjects in the formal beginnings of photography, and many of the most enduring images were shot in daylight studios. This one-day workshop, held in turn-of-the-century daylight studios, continues a classic approach to studio light. You will learn to see and shape daylight, work with models to discover compelling poses and experiment with creative and technical approaches to create a series. Craft and technique are addressed in the morning, and we shoot in the morning and afternoon.

Experience the beauty of Umbria through your camera at Behind the Lens in Umbria, a three-day immersive photography workshop led by acclaimed photographers Andrew French and Friderika Wollweber. Offered in two sessions—October 23–25 and May 8–10—a small group of photographers will explore ancient hilltop towns, sunlit vineyards, and intimate portraits, guided by hands-on sessions that blend technical instruction with creative freedom.

Casale San Cristoforo, a beautifully restored property in the Umbrian countryside, serves as our home base, where mornings begin, evenings end, and group gatherings take place. A Saturday photography workshop series in New York City for teens ages 14–18, led by professional photographer and instructor Andrew French.

Students receive personalized instruction tailored to their interests, experience, and creative vision, with guidance to develop their image-making, visual storytelling, and technical skills.

Workshops begin at Andrew French’s daylight studio in Union Square before heading out on photography shoots and field trips to inspiring locations, studios, and cultural spaces throughout New York City. We offer private 1:1 and small group photography instruction for teens, ages 13-18, in New York City, led by professional photographer and educator Andrew French.

These sessions are designed for students who want focused, personalized instruction, accelerated learning, and a fun creative experience. All skill levels are welcome—from beginners to advanced students—and each session is tailored to the student’s individual goals, interests, and experience level.

Program Overview

Each session is offered as a half-day or full-day immersive experience, combining hands-on technical training, creative development, and guided photo shoots across New York City.

Sessions typically begin at Andrew French’s daylight studio in Union Square, and may include field-based shooting throughout NYC depending on the selected topic. Each session is designed as a focused 4-hour intensive.

Students may book single-day intensives or build custom multi-day programs around these topics.
